Helping women now
Youth Plugged started a campaign of Breast Cancer Awareness in the month of October, which will be an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease. While most people are aware of breast cancer, many forget to take the steps to have a plan to detect the disease in its early stages and encourage others to do the same. We have made a lot of progress but still have a long way to go and need your help!
Every woman wants to know what she can do to lower her risk of breast cancer. Some of the factors associated with breast cancer — being a woman, your age, and your genetics, for example — can’t be changed. Other factors — being overweight, lack of exercise, smoking cigarettes, and eating unhealthy food — can be changed by making choices. By choosing the healthiest lifestyle options possible, you can empower yourself and make sure your breast cancer risk is as low as possible.
How can Breast Cancer Awareness Month make a difference?
We can use this opportunity to spread the word about steps women can take to detect breast cancer early.
Here are just a few ideas:
Ask doctors and nurses to speak to women about the importance of getting screened for breast cancer.
Encourage women ages 40 to 49 to talk with their doctors about when to start getting mammograms.
Organize an event to talk with women ages 50 to 74 in your community about getting mammograms every 2 years.
